PC Mitchell Curtis, a former officer with Avon and Somerset Police, was recently convicted of multiple offences, including two counts of coercive and controlling behaviour, intentional suffocation, and criminal damage. The charges arose from incidents that occurred over an 18-month period in South Gloucestershire while Curtis was off-duty. His abusive actions, both physical and emotional, were directed towards a victim who bravely came forward in October 2022. Following her report, Curtis was arrested and suspended from duty the same day.
The trial at Gloucester Crown Court revealed the extent of Curtis’s manipulative and violent behaviour and he is awaiting sentencing. Avon and Somerset police have confirmed that misconduct proceedings will follow, with the intention to ensure Curtis is barred from policing permanently.
Assistant Chief Constable Joanne Hall said:
“No police officer is above the law. I hope this outcome reassures any victim of crime that we take these matters incredibly seriously and we will always be perpetrator focussed, no matter who the offender is. Misconduct proceedings will now be progressed against Curtis, where we will seek to ensure that he is barred from ever working in policing again.”
