Compensation from the police

Homeless man to receive compensation from the police

We look at a recent case involving a man who will be entitled to compensation from the police after their actions against him amounted to a breach of his human rights.

The Metropolitan Police is due to compensate a homeless man for their inhumane actions towards him.

Suella Braverman previously called for a crackdown on homeless individuals who shelter in tents, describing it as a “lifestyle choice”. Following this comment, on 10th November 2023, a man who had been sheltering in his tent for approximately eight months was arrested outside a London Hospital and detained, after refusing to leave his tent following a dispersal order.

During the man’s six hours in police custody, his possessions, including his tent, were destroyed, along with property belonging to other homeless individuals in the vicinity.

After the actions of the Metropolitan Police were challenged, charges against the man have been dropped. The police have publicly apologised, stating that the dispersal order issued, and the arrest of the man was unlawful. They are now set to financially compensate him for breaching his right to respect for his private and family life under the Human Rights Act.

This is an example of the police misusing their powers and inflicting unfair treatment on citizens. It also illustrates the circumstances in which compensation can be recovered from the police.
