Injured by a police car

Tragic fatal crash caused by speeding police car: How our lawyers can recover compensation for people injured by a police car.

An inquest has revealed that a fatal crash in south-east London on October 17, 2024, was caused by an unmarked police car traveling at twice the speed limit. A 38-year-old woman, who was 39 weeks pregnant, tragically died when the unmarked Volvo collided with her car, causing it to flip several times. The police car, traveling at 80mph on a 40mph road, was in pursuit of a rider on a stolen motorcycle. It overtook traffic behind the woman’s vehicle before the crash occurred as she made a right turn into Sutcliffe Park Sports Centre. Witnesses reported that her car flipped, and her legs were trapped.

Despite emergency efforts, including a roadside C-section, the woman’s baby had no signs of life and was pronounced dead. The woman was later taken to the hospital but was tragically pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Data from the police vehicle showed it was traveling at 50mph at the point of impact after applying the brakes.

Two Metropolitan Police officers are currently under criminal investigation for potential driving offences, including causing death by dangerous driving. A third officer, a passenger in the vehicle, is also being investigated for gross misconduct for failing to challenge the driving. The police vehicles were responding to a report of a stolen motorcycle at the time of the crash.
