Real-life case study of a successful police dog compensation claim
We have recently represented a couple who were savagely attacked by a police dog inside their own home and went on to make a successful police dog compensation claim.
On the day of the incident, our client was in her living room with her new born baby whilst her husband was sleeping in the bedroom, having recently finished a night shift. It was a hot summer’s day and the couple had opened the back door to allow airflow through their home.
At approximately 4:30pm, while the mother was watching her child play on the floor, a dog suddenly appeared through the back door and approached her child. The dog was aggressive so the mother jumped in the way to save her baby from being bitten.
Instead, the dog grabbed hold of the mother’s arm in his mouth and sunk his teeth into her skin.
The husband heard the screams of his wife. He rushed to the living room to help her fend off the dog. He was also bitten by the dog while protecting his wife and child.
Approximately two minutes after the dog attack, two police officers appeared and removed the dog from the house. The police told our clients that it was a police dog which had been released to locate a suspect for an incident that had taken place in the local area. They did not explain how or why the dog had entered their house.
We specialise in police dog cases and the couple contacted our free legal helpline for guidance. We agreed to make a police dog compensation claim on their behalf and to work on a No Win, No Fee basis.
After instructing us to deal with the matter, we notified the police of our clients’ claims. Legal liability was admitted by the police for allowing the police dog to enter our client’s home. They were compensated for their injuries and out of pocket expenses in an out of court settlement.
